I had a chance to photograph the dress rehearsal of Ballet Jörgen Canada's Swan Lake this past week.
This show opens their 25th season as a Ballet company. Here is more about their show from their web site:
"Ballet Jörgen Canada opens the Flato Markham Theatre’s 2012-13 Diamond Series Season with a world premiere performance of the most revered classical ballet, Swan Lake. The centerpiece of the Toronto-based company’s silver anniversary season, this Canadian re-telling of the timeless classic was created by award-winning choreographer and the company’s founder, Bengt Jörgen. Set to the evocative Tchaikovsky score, Jörgen’s newest masterpiece takes place in the 18th century seascape at Fortress Louisbourg, Nova Scotia. A company of 25 of the best ballet dancers in North America bring the tragic tale of faithful love to life through vibrant contemporary choreography. They are joined by the Mariinsky Ballet Company’s Grigory Popov who will dance the lead role. Grigory, widely known for his electric vigor and his ability to hold soaring jumps, is a graduate of the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet and an international winner of the Vaganova-Prix International Competition."
Here are some images from the performance:
Prince Siegfried`s friends party it up at his 21st birthday party.
Daniel Da Silva plays as one of the party goers and jumps for joy.
Taylor Gill plays another party goer at the Prince's birthday bash.
But the fun comes to a stop when the Prince's mom, the Queen shows up and informs him he needs to find a wife and settle down.
Prince Siegried is played by Artist-in-Residence Grigory Popov
To get away from his new responsibilities, Prince Siegried runs off to go hunting by the Lakeside where he meets the Swan queen and her Swan maidens.
The Swan Queen is played by Saniya Abilmajineva.
The Swan Queen, Odette tells Siegried that her and her maidens are trapped in a spell by the evil wizard, Von Rothbart and can only be freed by a man who pledges his love for her. But before, Siegried can declare his love for her, they are separated.
The next day, the Queen throws another party for the Prince so that he can choose a wife.
Von Rothbart has brough his daughter, Odile to the party and has cast a spell so that she looks like Odette, the Swan Queen as a prospective wife for the Prince.
Hiroto Saito plays Von Rothbart.
Thinking that the Black Swan is Odette, the Prince has a great time dancing away the night with her.
The Prince asks the Black Swan to marry him. All the time, Odette has been watching from the window and takes off when she sees the Prince confess his love to her imposter.
Siegried finally realizes that he has been tricked and runs after the Swan Queen back to the Lake but Von Rothbart follows him and demands that he fulfill his promise to marry his daughter, Odile.
While the story of Swan Lake is well known, there have been many different endings that are performed by the Ballet Companies - I am not going to spoil the ending of this version for you. You will just have to go and see it. Tonight's show (Friday) is sold out but there are still tickets for the Sat. September 29 shows (2 PM & 8 PM). You can get tickets details here at the Flato Markham Theatre.
Thank you to Ballet Jörgen Canada for inviting me to their dress rehearsal.
